Prominent North Shore identity Colin Kay has put his name to a referendum calling for a new national flag.
Mr Kay was general manager of New Zealand's 1962 Commonwealth Games team and is a former mayor of Auckland.
NZFlag.com North Shore campaign manager Gary Boyd says campaigners have been busy collecting signatures for a petition calling for a referendum on whether the flag should be changed.
To be successful, they must collect 300,000 signatures of enrolled voters.
The North Shore team is aiming to collect 16,000 signatures on the Shore.
"A new instantly identifiable New Zealand flag will result in increased pride and passion for our country," Mr Boyd says.
