Kea versus Kiwi - A lighthearted look at our national nickname 24/04/06 by Kara-Leah Grant

There is a golden opportunity lurking on the horizon for each and every New Zealander proud to call Aotearoa home. This valuable opportunity will only arise when the decision finally comes to change our bland and archaic flag from its current and completely mistakable design – is it Australia? Is it New Zealand? No, it’s the United Kingdom, taking one last gasp of colonial breath…

Black flag colonises City Gallery 24/04/06 Press Release Wellington City Gallery

Daniel du Bern’s ‘Protection’ ...
The black flags atop Wellington’s municipal gallery is a provocative gesture, but one that is timely given current debate about a new design for New Zealand’s national flag. Du Bern argues: ‘the meaning of the black flag can be interpreted in numerous ways. Within a global context the black flag is commonly seen as being representative of Anarchist movements. Yet in New Zealand, with black being recognised as our national colour, the perceived meaning of a black flag—read All Black flag—is as much about this as anything else.’ There is also a connection to art history and the work of artists Kasmir Malevich, Ad Reinhardt and, more locally, Ralph Hotere.

Kiwi no more a flyer for New Zealand 8/03/06 Article in The Press

If you thought there was nothing more Kiwi than, well, a kiwi, you would be wrong.
Officials responsible for branding New Zealand overseas have given up protecting our feathered national icon, which they say has become generic.
A failure to trademark "kiwi" early on means it is now open season on the flightless bird, whose silhouette has for years graced the backpacks of New Zealanders abroad and is worn proudly by our troops from Afghanistan to the Solomon Islands.

Alternative national flag flies high in Nelson 17/11/05 Article in The Nelson Mail

A group of Nelson property owners has designed an alternative national flag and is flying it in upper Trafalgar St to gauge public reaction.

Reason's for being a proud kiwi 28/10/05 Editorial in The Manawatu Standard

...however, let us say that the kiwi is a point of difference on which we might reasonably capitalise. It is found nowhere else, so when the great day dawns that we cut the last of the apron strings with the Home Country, the kiwi will come into its own for it is, to use that much overworked word, unique. It could, for example, be an integral part of our new flag which we will need when we become truly independent. Not a brand, not even an icon, just a much-loved bird that's all ours.

Fervour for the flag carries day 04/08/05 Editorial in The New Zealand Herald

An array of prominent names and plentiful funding stood behind the campaign to change the New Zealand flag. This succeeded in generating a strong degree of public awareness. Yet, in the end, all the effort proved not enough to orchestrate even a citizens-initiated referendum on the issue.

Flag's time will come 29/07/05 Editorial in The Timaru Herald

...The NZFlag. com Trust is obviously disappointed – hence the "apathy" remark – but it can be congratulated for provoking debate. No one else was going to. And the organisers did a tremendous job – getting New Zealand celebrities on board, promoting alternative flag designs, making regular public statements and attempting to get corporates on board.

True colours 23/07/05 Article in The Dominion Post

They've battled apathy. They've attracted celebrities and corporate clout and the wrath of opponents. Now the campaign to change New Zealand's flag has received a serious body blow.

Representations: Che Tibby's view from Wellington 29/06/05 Online PublicAddress.net

Flag debate unfurls 21/06/05 Article in the Kapi Mana News

A series of five flag-related exhibitions currently on at Pataka is raising interesting debate and even TV3's John Campbell got in on the act.

Symbols of sovereignty was launched last weekend with the help of Facelift's John Campbell - aka Cohen Holloway.

Campbell, who supports a new flag for New Zealand, was a fitting special guest, or at least his impersonator was - giving a rousing and entertaining address at the June 12 winter season launch.

Pataka flies the nation's flag 10/06/05 Article in the Dominion Post

Pataka has devoted five exhibitions to the debate on New Zealand's flag.

It's only a matter of time before we change our flag, says the curator of an exhibition looking at our flag and the move to replace it with something unique.

Bob Maysmor has spent months immersed in issues surrounding our flag for an exhibition at Pataka - an exhibition he says is not just a debate about change, but a show that looks at the history, the power and the emotional ties we have with our flag.

Dead possum and a lonely Union Jack 04/06/05 Article in the New Zealand Herald

Spend the morning in Design Studio III at the University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts and you'll walk away with a good idea of what the future flag of New Zealand might look like - and there's only one Union Jack, on a black background.

Flags at Pataka 18/05/05 Article in the Northern Courier

From a silver fern on a black background or the removal of the Union Jack, to Kotahitanga or Tino Rangatiratanga emblems, it seems that there is no shortage of suggested alterations.

But, love it or hate it, the fact remains that the flag is has an indelible place in our heritage - as do all flags that have appeared throughout our history.

In keeping with that, Pataka Museum and Art Gallery is hosting 'Symbols of Sovereignty', a series of five exhibitions about the flags of Aotearoa.

There's plenty of room up the pole 05/05/05 Article in The Wellingtonian

Another option in the great New Zealand flag debate - should we keep the one we have or adopt a flag that better reflect's the nation's identity in the 21st Century - is to have more than one flag.

It's Time For a change 16/02/05 Letter to the Editor in the Dominion Post

I disagree with some correspondents who oppose a change to our flag. To state, as one did, that we fought in World War II under our national flag is an exaggeration.

I'm a returned serviceman and don't recall any policy of units flying the New Zealand flag. It would be more realistic to say we served under the Union Jack or the Stars and Stripes, according to where one served -- in the Middle East or the Pacific.

It's time for a change. Generally speaking, we neither love nor respect our flag. There are many bare flagpoles. Only three institutions regularly fly it -- the RSA, Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald's. Several government departments don't display it from their buildings, the Upper Hutt courthouse being one.

I look forward to the time when we see a new national flag flying proudly atop the Beehive.

When a flag can mean life or death 11/02/05 Article in the Southland Times

Of course we must repect the present flag and the feelings of the old soldiers who fought under it but we must also think of the young soldiers. We have people, ships and aircraft in many parts of the world's hot spots using a flag that has another country's flag emblazoned on it. They need a distinctive, recognisable New Zealand flag.

Christian heritage deserves its place in our flag. 08/02/05 Article in the Otago Daily Times

The campaign to replace New Zealand’s flag seems to be gaining some momentum. Whatever its outcome, the focus on the flag will probably do more to stir people’s thinking about our distinctive national identity than the annual observance of our national day, at least at Waitangi itself.

Ian Harris expresses his views in his column Honest to God. This also appeared in the Dominion Post on 5 February.

Live and kicking - news duo joins calls to change NZ flag 06/02/05 Article in the Sunday Star Times

TV3's John Campbell and Carol Hirschfeld have joined the chorus of celebrity voices calling for a new flag, on a day when we celebrate what it means to be a New Zealander.

"I am extraordinarily proud to be a New Zealander and I do not see the essence of New Zealand lying in the Union Jack," said Campbell, whose partner and father are British.

Flagging a major change 05/02/05 Editorial in the Waikato Times

The yearly debate on one of this country's most revered institutions is under way, writes the Waikato Times in an editorial. We are talking about the national flag and whether it is time to ditch the Union Jack/Southern Cross combo in favour of something more racy. The debate could easily have been about the national anthem, which also comes in for regular scrutiny.

An old flag flapping on the pole again 02/02/05 Editorial in the Nelson Mail

In politics as in many other things, timing is key. With the long run-up to the general election now in first gear, the Government's priority will be to steer clear of controversy...That makes launching a national petition as part of a campaign to change the flag something of a gamble, if only because the issue itself is one few politicians want a bar of due to fears it might alienate those whose support they will be hoping for come September.

The editor follows up on 29/01/05 Editorial in the Bay of Plenty Times05/02/05

ONE thing of which I have no doubt is that the debate over changing the flag is going to be a hot one. We have received quite a bit of feedback this week on the petition campaign launched last week. This is an issue that will only be resolved by debate. We need to listen to all points of view, consider them all and then decide on the best way forward. Good, strong debate has always been healthy and this issue is no different.

Flag referendum demanded 02/02/05 Article in the New Zealand News UK

The organiser of a campaign to change the flag says the right design has not yet been found but he is confident the existing one will be replaced.

Where's That From? 01/02/05 Article in the New Zealand Herald

The movement to change the New Zealand flag has gained momentum during the past week but debate about the original design was just as lively more than 100 years ago. The New Zealand flag is more than a century old, becoming the official national flag under the New Zealand Ensign Act on June 12, 1902.

Petition for new flag launched 25/01/05 TV0ne News - Television New Zealand

High profile kiwis get behind flag petition: Several prominent New Zealanders are taking to the streets to support a referendum on whether the national flag should be changed. About 12 well-known figures, including sports commentator Keith Quinn, head of the stock exchange Mark Weldon, actress Dame Kate Harcourt and former All Black Graham Mourie officially launched a petition in favour of changing the flag at parliament on Tuesday. Six alternative flag designs were on display at the launch. Weldon says this country deserves the best flag it can get. He says the national flag should be a statement and a symbol more representative of the country. In Auckland former Governor General Dame Cath Tizard, writer Greg McGee and director Ian Mune lent their support to the campaign. Other high-profile figures will be out in New Plymouth, Tauranga and Christchurch. Wellington businessman Lloyd Morrison was the first to add his signature to the petition, saying the current flag was imposed on this country in 1865 and it is time for a change. The NZflag.com trust initiated the petition and wants the question of a new flag put to New Zealanders at this year's general election. Spokesperson Jo Coughlan says it is confident it will get the 300,000 signatures needed by May for that to happen. Coughlan says if a vote favoured a new flag the government should set up a taskforce to choose a design to be put to another referendum in 2008.

True champions 24/08/04 Concluding paragraph from the original editorial in The Press

A more significant issue for this country may be the complaints about the national flag. More than a few New Zealanders watching Ulmer's medal ceremony will have been annoyed at the difficulty distinguishing (for those not familiar) the New Zealand and Australian flags. Even our chef de mission, Dave Currie, believes it is time to change to the silver fern. It is not a call any governing politician would want to embrace for fear of awakening the risky republican argument. But perhaps .yesterday's confusing image of the two trans-Tasman flags might lead to sport providing the impetus for timely debate over the silver fern's merits.
