This site is intended to stimulate debate about the New Zealand Flag. We want all New Zealanders to ask themselves whether the current flag represents our country as we see it today? Does the current flag reflect our vision for New Zealand's future? Does the flag portray the image we want to give of New Zealand internationally? Most importantly, does it inspire us?
NZFlag.com's view is that the answer to all these questions is that the current flag can be considerably improved upon. The current flag evolved from a naval flag. The current flag is a flag we were required to fly on our ships because we were a British colony. New Zealanders have never voted for their flag. After a couple of hundred years we believe it is time New Zealanders chose their own flag.
The NZFlag.com Trust is a non profit charitable trust established to encourage New Zealanders to debate changing the flag. For this to happen we need New Zealanders to openly debate the issues. Then we need a referendum asking New Zealanders whether they would like their flag to be changed. If 50% support such change we hope an independent group of prominent New Zealanders could be appointed to choose a design that better takes us forward for the next 100 years!!! It is likely that a second referendum would then be held allowing New Zealanders to choose either the new design or to stick with the existing flag.
This website will evolve over time. It gives some views about the flag and expresses some opinions about why we should consider changing our flag. It is important to remember the flag will not change unless we agree that should happen; that we can only have one official flag and that flag should unite us and inspire us as a country. New Zealanders are proud and can be passionate, but often are slow to change. We think the time for change is now. Please debate the issue. Please stick to debate about the flag and not about other issues or agendas. Please show each other and the world how we are growing up!
