The silver fern is an established emblem of national identity, which I believe is capable of transcending its current associations to become a symbol of unity for our country.
This design adapts the distinctive fern shape to flag proportions, endowing it with dignity and simplicity appropriate to flag usage. Inclusion of the koru speaks clearly for our indigenous heritage. The unfurling frond also represents potential, our fertile land and enterprising spirit. Stylising the fern according to time-honoured precepts of Maori art ensures an undated, enduring design.
No colours are as appropriate for this design as black and white. They have evolved naturally as an expression of our being. They are synonymous with the silver fern and unique to New Zealand.
It may be that our future identity has been growing alongside us all the time.
