Thank you for your interest in the NZFlag.com Trust's campaign to change the flag. As part of our campaign, we have decided to try to win the right to hold a Citizens Initiated Referendum on the future of our flag at this year's General Election. If we are to be successful, we must collect 300,000 signatures. While we have 12 months to collect these signatures, if we collect them by the beginning of May we can time the referendum to coincide with the Election.

This is where you come in. If you agree that New Zealanders need to have the opportunity to debate the design of our flag, please download the petition form, sign it and ask your friends and family to do the same. Every signature counts. We know that many people support the idea that New Zealanders should have the opportunity to debate this important topic. If each of our supporters gathers a few signatures, we know that we will easily reach our target by May.

It is easy to fill out the form, but please read the instructions carefully before signing. Legislation around these type of petitions is very strict and signatures must conform to this legislation if they are to count.

We would appreciate it if you could fill in these forms and ask any of your friends, colleagues or others if they would also like to sign before posting them back to us at PO Box 1395, Wellington.

The basic rules for signing the form are that:

· Signatories must be 18 years or over and a New Zealand citizen or a Permanent Resident. To be eligible to sign, New Zealand citizens living overseas must have come back into the country for at least 1 day in the last 3 years and Permanent Residents overseas must have come back into the country for at least 1 day in the last year.

· Signatures must be on the official form. It is not possible to photocopy or fax signatures back to the Trust.

· Signatories must include their signature, family and first name, residential address (not a P O Box number or R D number) and date or birth.

· It is possible to photocopy the form and pass it on to others to sign. If you want more copies, e-mail info@nzflag.co.nz.

· Signatories must not sign the petition form more than once. Additional signatures will not be counted. Signatories must also not alter the wording, make comments on or deface the petition form. This will ensure all signatures following on are invalidated.

· Signatories must also not put signatures on the reverse side of the form. They will be not be counted.

· It is possible to sign on behalf of another person if that person is unable to do it for themselves. Just write a note on the side of the form explaining that this has been done.

If you have any questions about the petition or require hard copies of the petition form, feel free to e-mail info@nzflag.co.nz or call the Trust's campaign manager, Iona Pannett, on (04) 384-3382.

Thank you in advance for supporting this campaign. Let's change the flag!
